    LZ4

    LZ4

    Extremely fast compression algorithm

LZ4 is lossless compression algorithm, providing compression speed > 500 MB/s per core (>0.15 Bytes/cycle). It features an extremely fast decoder, with speed in multiple GB/s per core (~1 Byte/cycle). A high compression derivative, called LZ4_HC, is available, trading customizable CPU time for compression ratio. LZ4 library is provided as open-source software using a BSD license. This benchmark simulates simple "static content transfer" scenario such as OS Kernel compression or video game's static assets (text/images/tables/scripts/etc) which loading from Flash Memory / HDD / SSD. In this case, compression time is completely ignored. Because only content developers compress the data at once and usually they don't care about its computational cost. But they always care end user's experience a.k.a. "loading time" and bandwidth. Please pay attention to "LZ4HC -9" which is quite faster than other methods.

    Zstandard

    Zstandard

Zstandard - Fast real-time compression algorithm

Zstandard is a fast compression algorithm, providing high compression ratios. It also offers a special mode for small data, called dictionary compression. The reference library offers a very wide range of speed / compression trade-off, and is backed by an extremely fast decoder (see benchmarks below). Zstandard library is provided as open source software using a BSD license. Its format is stable and published as IETF RFC 8478. The negative compression levels, specified with --fast=#, offer faster compression and decompression speed in exchange for some loss in compression ratio compared to level 1, as seen in the table above. Zstd can trade compression speed for stronger compression ratios. It is configurable by small increment. Decompression speed is preserved and remain roughly the same at all settings, a property shared by most LZ compression algorithms, such as zlib or lzma.

    Brotli

    Brotli

    Brotli compression format

Version 1.0.9 contains a fix to "integer overflow" problem. This happens when "one-shot" decoding API is used (or input chunk for streaming API is not limited), input size (chunk size) is larger than 2GiB, and input contains uncompressed blocks. After the overflow happens, memcpy is invoked with a gigantic num value, that will likely cause the crash. Brotli is a generic-purpose lossless compression algorithm that compresses data using a combination of a modern variant of the LZ77 algorithm, Huffman coding and 2nd order context modeling, with a compression ratio comparable to the best currently available general-purpose compression methods. It is similar in speed with deflate but offers more dense compression. The specification of the Brotli Compressed Data Format is defined in RFC 7932. Brotli is open-sourced under the MIT License. You can download and install brotli using the vcpkg dependency manager.

Guide to Open Source Archiving Software

Open source archiving software is a type of software designed to store, compress, and preserve data in a secure and convenient manner. This software generally works by gathering up loose files such as documents, images, audio or video recordings, and compressing them into a single file, known as an archive, that can then be used for storage or retrieval. Open source archiving software can also be used to transfer this data over the internet or other networked systems.

The most popular open source archiving software is the 7-Zip compression utility developed by Igor Pavlov in 1999. 7-Zip utilizes powerful algorithms that allow it to compress data into much smaller files than traditional methods, resulting in faster downloads and increased storage capacity on disks. As 7-Zip is open source, users are able to customize it to fit their individual needs; for example, adding support for additional filenames or formats. Additionally, its command line interface provides a wide range of features not found in other programs; these include password protection, encryption settings, and automatic backups when working with large archives. With its high level of customization and flexibility, 7-Zip continues to be one of the most widely used archiving utilities today.

Other popular open source archiving applications include WinRAR (developed by Eugene Roshal) and PeaZip (developed by Giorgio Tani). Both programs provide similar abilities to 7-Zip but vary slightly in terms of user interface design; WinRAR uses Windows Explorer while PeaZip has its own dedicated graphical user interface (GUI). While both provide strong compression capabilities compared to other utilities, their main advantage lies in the ability of users to create custom archives incorporating specific file formats or conditions. This makes them ideal for long-term archival purposes where security is paramount.

In short, open source archiving software enables users to store large amounts of data quickly and securely while allowing them the flexibility to tailor it according to their individual needs. In this way, it helps preserve digital information for future generations; ensuring that our valuable memories remain safe for years to come.

How To Get Started With Open Source Archiving Software

Getting started with open source archiving software can be a great way to begin taking advantage of the many benefits of archiving. To get started, you'll need to do some research and decide which program is the right fit for your needs. There are a variety of options available, so take your time choosing one that meets your requirements.

Once you have decided on an archival program, it is important to read through the documentation thoroughly and understand how it works before you start using it. This will give you an understanding of how to correctly use the software and make sure that everything goes smoothly. You may also want to check out tutorials or online forums to help you get a better grasp on using the specific program.

Next, install the program onto your computer or device, depending on which platform it is designed for; and make sure all updates are completed. Once the program is ready for use, create an archive by collecting data that needs to be stored, such as documents and files in standard formats like PDF or TIFF images (depending on what types of material you plan on archiving). Make sure each file has a description or title so they can easily be found when needed in future searches.

Finally, organize all relevant items into directories within folders according to their mediums or categories; this helps speed up future search requests by allowing users direct access to information quickly without spending too much time trying to find them manually with keywords alone. As long as these steps are followed, open source archiving software should be easy-to-use and will provide reliable storage solutions for important records and digital materials at little-to-no cost.
